6 Ways To Experience Winter in San Diego

While many of us haven’t been able to travel to our favorite winter destinations this season – there are many ways to get your winter fix here in San Diego. Whether you’re itching to get out of the house or to see some snow, here are a few of our favorite ways to experience winter in San Diego 2021 style.

Whale Watching

It’s whale-watching season here on the west coast. Take in the fresh air as you overlook majestic grey whales crash into the water. Though you can see them from certain spots along the shore, your best bet is to take a boat ride to see them up close.

Winter in San Diego means 60-degree weather, a few rainy days, and beautiful winter sunsets. Mother Nature shows off by painting the sky with captivating hues of pink, blue and gold.  As the days gradually grow longer, take advantage of the stunning night sky and make an adventure out of it. A few of our favorite sunset spots include Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Cove, and Balboa Park.

Take a Hike

Since many indoor activities are a no-go right now, hikes are always a great way to spend some time out of the house. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and check out one of San Diego’s famous hikes. Click here to see our favorite beginner, moderate and intermediate hikes within 15 minutes of your front door.

Seasonal Drinks

60-degree weather is a dream for some people this time of year, but for us San Dieagans, it means blasting the heat, layers of clothing, and piping hot coffee in the morning. Swing by your favorite coffee shop to see what seasonal drinks they’re serving to warm you up from the inside out!

Holsem Coffee offers a few seasonal options including their boozy eggnog latte and a winter classic, Peppermint Mocha. You can easily order for delivery through Grub Hub or you can throw your mask on, head to Holsem and order coffee the old fashioned way! Every Saturday in January you can even hear the Swinging Gypsies bringing good vibes to University Ave. in North Park.

Virtual Cooking Classes

Step up your cooking game by taking a cooking class. Cold weather calls for a big bowl of something warm and HipCooks is here to help.  Their spot in North Park is currently closed for in-person classes but their West LA location is hosting virtual cooking classes.  Ingredient lists are sent out in advance to prepare for your class. Support local and pick up fresh ingredients like fruits, veggies, eggs, fish, and more at farmers’ markets such as the Little Italy Mercato or Hillcrest Farmers Market.

Weekend Getaways to the Snow!

If you’re a transplant to the San Diego area, you may be missing snow this time of year. Luckily, we’re close enough to a few mountains that will remind you of home.

Big Bear, Idyllwild, Lake Arrowhead and Joshua Tree are just a few nearby spots to experience a chilly weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city.  You can hike, ski/snowboard, visit the local shops in town, or find a cozy spot with a hot tub so you can enjoy the fresh air while staying toasty warm. And if you are missing the snow, just remember… you can’t shovel sunshine!

Winter may be different this year due to the pandemic but if you take us up on one of these ways to experience winter in San Diego, please remember to socially distance, wear a mask and be responsible.

Stay safe, San Diego!
