Summer may be coming to an end soon, but things are only heating up at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA). This month, enjoy live music, engaging workshops and a brand-new exhibition. Check out more information on everything happening this month below.
First Friday Artwalk | Music at the Museum with The Anthony Cullins Trio
September 3 | 5PM-9PM | 704 Pier View Way
Explore OMA’s exhibitions for free starting at 5PM and stay for the free concert beginning at 6:30PM as Oceanside’s First Friday Art Walk extends into the night with the explosive sound and epic blues-rock guitar riffs of The Anthony Cullins Trio. Capacity is limited and admission to the performance is free, but guests are encouraged to reserve a ticket ahead of time along with the option to reserve a VIP table for four. The evening will also feature a cash bar with the option to purchase your drink tickets here ahead of time for beer, wine, or premium wine by the glass.

Two-Day Workshop: The Watercolors of Georgia O’Keeffe
September 13 & 15 | 1PM-4PM | 704 Pier View Way
A master of painting in watercolor, Georgia O’Keefe has completed over 200 watercolor paintings in a two-year period. Explore her techniques in various landscapes, skies, and mountains by completing several studies before executing a final painting. Join OMA art instructor Robin Douglas for a fresh look at the diverse environments of Oceanside through the lens of this signature artist, drawing some extra inspiration from the 2021 Plein Air Festival Juried Exhibition currently on display at the museum. All supplies for your original artwork including high-quality watercolor paper will be provided.

Grand Opening Reception

Join the OMA team and fellow art lovers for an evening celebrating four of the museum’s newest exhibitions, Divisions by Dean Ramos, Smallest Places by Melissa Walter, Contemporary Portraits of the Simay Collection, and Migration by Charlotte Bird. Enjoy an evening filled with refreshments while exploring what’s new at OMA this season and connecting with the many artists that fill the museum with creativity and outstanding vision. The evening will begin with a VIP hour at 4PM exclusively for OMA President’s Circle members, followed by general admission at 5PM.

New Exhibition | Migration by Charlotte Bird
September 18 – January 9 | 704 Pier View Way
Artist Charlotte Bird is a San Diego and Alaska-based fiber artist fascinated by the cycles of life in nature. In particular, the plight of the Sandhill Crane, their annual migration from Alaska to California, Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico, their elaborate rituals and dances, and the challenges they face in an era of climate change and habitat destruction. She is troubled by observations that climate change is slowly and subtly changing the birds’ lives. The success of the sandhill crane rests on its ability to adapt to diverse habitats extending from the Arctic to the subtropics. The birds cannot adapt to nesting grounds flooded by melting permafrost or to flooded feeding-grounds
in Nebraska and California.
At a simple level, Migration introduces visitors to the wonder of America’s sandhill cranes; at a deeper level, to connect people with the challenges facing cranes and other natural wonders in an era of climate change and habitat destruction. The gallery will be installed with life-sized fabric cranes and grasses, and a cloud of small cranes will be installed through the stairwell into the gallery.

Taste of Art | Catch the Great Wave
September 30 | 6PM-8PM| 704 Pier View Way
Take a deep dive into the legacy of one of Japan’s most influential artists, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), and his iconic Great Wave landscape print that took the world by storm. Join OMA art instructor Robin Douglas to create large format paintings, epic ocean scenes and meaningful symbols all fused together to depict nature’s power. Sip on refreshments while you create your own work of art. All supplies for your original artwork will be provided.
