New Faces & Local Creatives Making An Impact At ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station This Month

With the recent arrival of spring and San Diego entering the Red Tier, we are celebrating all the best local talent at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station! From spring break camps and sustainable textiles, to new faces and a conversation with locals making an impact, San Diego creatives continue to use art as a way to spark a conversation.

NEWS FACES

Imperfects: With the simple mission of highlighting the good in humanity by focusing on our imperfection, Imperfects mindfully curates goods made in the USA that are capable of bettering the human experience. Offering fashion, surf craft and skate products, each product is made from deadstock and sustainable globally sourced fabrics, lowering their carbon footprint and reducing the amount of waste created. Creativity is the backbone of what they do because it’s the ultimate way of putting oneself out into the world for all to see.

The Rosin Box Project: San Diego’s homegrown contemporary ballet company has been presenting captivating contemporary ballet performances and dance education experiences to the greater San Diego community since 2018. Their mission is to reimagine the way artists and audiences connect with and experience dance. Their dancer’s talents are shared with patrons and K-12 students through a variety of performances and outreach programs. In 2020, they created a digital theater for virtual viewing called “The Virtual Box,” including the current “Stay At Home Film Fest,’ which features dance filmed outside at the ARTS DISTRICT.

Chris Howard Imagery: A lifelong love for art and visual expression stemming from his early childhood, Chris Howard discovered he could recreate the world around him with just a pencil or a paintbrush. His current mediums have now expanded to include photography and mixed media. During his 12 years in business, Chris has photographed more than 400 weddings as well as hundreds of family and senior portraits and has been commissioned for multiple large-scale canvas oil paintings.

SUSTAINABLE TEXTILES

Teaming up with the San Diego Mesa College Fashion Program, Visions Art Museum presents “Making Waves: Textiles Addressing Sustainability” on display now through April 11, 2021. Participants were challenged with creating a fabric based on the theme of sustainability, which could be designed using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or similar design programs.

Students performed research and found inspiration that they felt spoke to the theme. A group of designs was then chosen by a committee and the fabrics were printed digitally by Spoonflower in North Carolina. Appropriate to the theme, all designs were printed on organic cotton.

EASTER DINING

Solare Ristorante: Join Solare Ristorante on Easter Sunday for a taste of Italy, no passport required! Solare’s Executive Chef, Filippo Piccini, has designed a special à la carte menu filled with authentic Italian delicacies and dishes for this special day. Their Easter menu includes Maine lobster fettuccine, tender rack of lamb, signature carbonara pasta with guanciale, Easter lasagna, brunch-style pizza, and a great selection for the kids.

SPRING BREAK CAMPS

Keeps your kids entertained this Spring Break with a variety of in-person and online camps available in everything from yoga and art to music and crafting. Highlights include:

Monart School of Art is hosting a Zoom Spring Art Workshop, April 5-9. Enjoy creating several exciting works of art inspired by the spring season. Experiment with several different art mediums, including oil pastel, graphite, graphic marker, watercolor, colored pencil, tissue paper, collage & more. Students will learn how to combine media into beautifully diverse works of art! Students are encouraged to wear an old T-shirt to protect their clothes.

If I Was a Bird Yoga Studio is hosting outdoor, virtual and in-studio Spring Break Camps for children ages 4-7 and 7-11 now through April 9 with themed art projects. Additionally, they are hosting a healthy and uplifting week-long Paddle Yoga Camp for children ages 7-11. To keep the fun times going, be sure to enroll in one of their weekly yoga and art camps for children ages 3-7.

San Diego Craft Collective is helping your children get crafty during their in-person Craft Camp taking place April 5-9. Hosted outdoors, each project is designed to hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, creativity, and exploration of materials. Students will make several craft projects that they get to take home. This camp is recommended for children 6 years and older. Projects are matched up to the children’s age/ability, and classes will break into smaller groups of similar ages.

Songbirds Music knows that kids learn best by playing. Their spring session features four unique sessions designed to get your children away from the screen and up dancing and singing. The spring session lasts 10 weeks, beginning April 5-June 18 with selections including Music Together, Rhythm Kids, and Canta y Baila Conmigo. Additionally, new parents can also get in on the fun during an interactive class for them and their baby taking place April 23-June 11.

INTERACTIVE CONVERSATION WITH LOCAL CREATIVES

Tune in for an intimate discussion with local creatives. Benito Bautista, Executive Director and Co-Founder of San Diego Filipino Cinema, is hosting a special Creative Conversation
on April 22 from 6PM-7PM via Zoom. Linda Caballero Sotelo, Executive Director at New Americans Museum, will also join the panel discussion focusing on issues of non-profit programming during a pandemic, discoveries of present stories and issues for filming, future collaborative projects in ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station, and much more.
