North City is set to host the unique and extremely challenging Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR), an extremely challenging race in the spirit of the great European one-day Spring Classics from July 16, 2021, through July 18, 2021.
Postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will feature a newly augmented 132-mile route with more than 12,000 feet of climbing and over 50-miles of off-road terrain, 70 vendors, a mile-long finishing circuit within its perimeter, and Belgian Waffles and beer at the finish line.
The biggest event of its kind in the United States
The BWR is a three-day party featuring new events for 2021, including a Friday night LOOK CRIT-CROSS race for different categories, live music and a massive beer garden. Racers and event patrons will be treated to Belgian waffles and fries, BBQ, cheese, bread, salad, Lost Abbey Belgian Ale and more.
Although the overall event is irreverent and fun, the race itself is serious business, drawing world-class riders from around the globe.
“The Belgian Waffle Ride is the biggest event of its kind in the United States this year and it’s incredible to see how the event has grown in popularity and participation,’ said Michael Marckx, founder of Monuments of Cycling (MOC) and creator of the Belgian Waffle Ride.
“We couldn’t have created this legacy event without the support of our long-time partners, including Lost Abbey Brewing who have been with us for nine years. Now, we’re settling into an expanded footprint at North City and look forward to growing the event there along with the continued evolution of the ‘city within a city’.”
The three-day event will feature the following:
Friday, July 16 from 12PM – 6PM: BWR EXPO & Registration
Saturday, July 17 from 10AM – 9PM: BWR EXPO, Registration & VIP/Media Event
Sunday, July 18 at 7AM: BWR Race Start; EXPO, Waffles, Music, Beer, Fun and Games from 10AM– 6PM
“We are excited for the opportunity to host one of the largest cycling events in the country,” said Andy Tenn, senior project manager at Sea Breeze Properties. “North City’s ideal location, urban layout, accessibility and variety of local businesses make it the perfect venue to entertain cyclists and observers alike.”
The Belgian theme will be in full force with a host of unique entertainment features, a variety of craft beers reflecting the monastic brewing traditions of Belgium, and more. Attendees can peruse a wide range of offerings from event sponsors and over 70 vendors, test ride a Canyon, and people-watch in Belgian bliss. For more information, visit here.
